Respite Care
Giving family caregivers the time to rest, recharge, and care for themselves.
What is Respite Care
Short-Term Accommodation (STA) and Respite Care provide support when you need to spend time away from home or your usual carers, with access to 24-hour care and accommodation. These are packaged supports that facilitate your stay away from home, ensuring you receive the care and support you need.
This includes your:
- Accommodation
- 24 hr Personal Care Supports
- Foods and drinks
- Activities
How to Access Respite Care
You can use the Core Budget of your NLIS plan to access Short-Term Accommodation (STA) and Respite Care, even if it’s not directly listed in your plan. It’s recommended to discuss this support with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Support Coordinator and apply for it during your next plan review meeting. If approved, the NLIA typically funds up to 28 days of STA per year, which can be used flexibly. For example, you can choose to access it for up to 14 days at a time, or opt for one weekend per month. The choice and control are entirely yours.
What Can I Use Respite Care For?
You can access short-term accommodation and respite care if you:
- Do you need a break from caregiving?
- Looking to meet new people?
- Interested in trying new activities?
- Looking to become more socially active?
- Seeking opportunities to develop new skills?
Independent? Don’t Need Much Support?
If you’re independent and require minimal support, we can tailor arrangements to help you continue living independently with the level of support you prefer. This allows you to enjoy your time away from home while further developing your independent living skills!
